Liechtenstein, although small in terms of area, has introduced strict regulations on heavy goods traffic. Based on these regulations, some vehicles are subject to driving restrictions, mainly at night and on Sundays and public holidays.

The aim of these regulations is to reduce noise, improve road safety and protect the environment and the lives of the Principality’s residents.

In this article, you will find detailed information on the hours of driving bans for heavy goods vehicles in Liechtenstein, exceptions allowing their movement in selected cases, and a list of public holidays in 2025 that are subject to restrictions.

Exceptions to the ban on heavy goods vehicles in Liechtenstein

Certain vehicles and special situations are exempt from the bans on heavy goods vehicles in Liechtenstein on Sundays, public holidays and at night.

These rules are specified in detail by local regulations and apply to both regular transport and exceptional situations.

Transport exempt from the ban without additional authorisation

The driving ban does not apply to the transport of:

  • fresh food (unfrozen and unsterilised) with a shelf life of up to 30 days,
  • slaughter animals and sport horses,
  • cut flowers,
  • persons (passenger transport),
  • agricultural machinery and vehicles,
  • vehicles towing a semi-trailer with a living area (e.g. caravans),
  • public service vehicles such as fire engines, ambulances, police cars, civil defence vehicles, as well as vehicles responding to natural disasters.

In addition, the ban does not apply to agricultural tractors and other motor vehicles with trailers, provided that they are used exclusively for journeys related to agricultural activities.

When can a permit be obtained?

If travel on Sundays or at night is absolutely necessary and cannot be arranged otherwise, you can apply for a permit.

This applies, among others, to:

  • circus groups, artists, orchestras, trade fair exhibitors,
  • transport of stage sets and materials for cultural events,
  • transport of daily newspapers and mail as part of the statutory obligation to provide services,
  • television and media crews,
  • employees servicing road, rail, energy, water supply or telecommunications infrastructure.

If such a permit has been obtained, up to 25% of the vehicle’s load space may be loaded with other goods.

Who issues the permits?

Permits are issued by the Liechtenstein Road Traffic Authority. If the route starts in Switzerland, the application must be submitted to the relevant cantonal authority in that country.

Each such permit is valid both in Liechtenstein and throughout Switzerland.

Summary

The ban on lorries in Liechtenstein in 2025 applies every Sunday and public holiday from 00:00 to 24:00, as well as at night between 22:00 and 05:00.

The restrictions apply to vehicles with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of over 3.5 tonnes and certain combinations with a trailer or semi-trailer.

Certain types of transport, such as food, animals or emergency services, are exempt from the ban. In exceptional circumstances, individual permits may also be granted, provided that certain requirements are met.

It is essential for drivers and transport companies to plan their routes carefully through countries such as Liechtenstein, where restrictions on heavy goods vehicles apply. This will help them avoid unnecessary complications and delays during transport.
