OBU (On-Board Unit)

OBU (On-Board Unit) is an electronic on-board device that must be installed in vehicles subject to the e-toll system in Slovakia. It records the entire route and transmits the recorded data to the toll collection system. The fees are calculated automatically – the driver is not involved in determining them.

Types and validity periods of vignettes

In the Slovak toll system, the type of motorway vignette to be purchased depends on whether the vehicle is towing a trailer subject to an additional charge and on the period of validity required.

Types of vignettes by vehicle category:

• Category M – for two-wheeled vehicles or vehicle combinations with a maximum permissible weight of 3.5 tonnes, as well as vehicles of category M1 (i.e. with a maximum of 9 seats, including the driver) – regardless of their weight,
• Category O1 / O2 – for trailers, if the total permissible weight of the combination (in the case of a two-wheeled vehicle with a trailer) exceeds 3.5 tonnes. In this case, a vignette is required for both the towing vehicle and its trailer.

Validity periods of e-vignettes:

• 1-day – valid until midnight on the day selected by the user.
• 10-day – valid for 10 consecutive calendar days from the date specified at the time of purchase.
• 30-day – valid for 30 days from the date of commencement of the vignette’s validity.
• 365-day – valid for 365 days from the date of activation. It replaced the previously valid annual vignette, which expired on 31 January of the following year.
